Warm on our face, illuminating to our rooms and homes, sunlight is a simple and small bit of happiness. This accessible source of happiness plays a pivotal role in our mood. Ever heard of seasonal depression? A lack of sunlight doesn’t just lead to depression, we all feel happier with a bit more light in our lives. Sunlight energizes us, boosts our health, and regulates our sleep cycle. How, exactly, does this glowing light bring us a small bit of happiness? Let’s explore it below!

Happiness Hormones

When we are exposed to sunlight, our brain releases more serotonin, which is a happiness hormone! The release of serotonin is triggered by light going through our eyes, cuing the release of serotonin by triggering certain parts of our retina.

In addition, we often feel happier when exposed to sunlight, due to the abundance of benefits that stem from time exposed to sun. Not only does serotonin boost our mood; it also helps us feel more awake, and regulates our emotions. With more sun, our circadian rhythm adjusts, helping us fall into a healthier sleep-wake pattern. Put simply, sunlight contributes to our overall health and mindset. When all these moving parts come together, we feel happier! More sleep, a regulated mood, and an increase in serotonin all brings us a small bit of happiness.

What about cloudy days?

Good news! Even during the winter – or rainy days – there is still sunlight. While clouds may block some sun, they do not eliminate this source of happiness. Regardless of the weather, open up your blinds, go for a walk, or park further to increase time spent outdoors. If you can’t go outdoors, consider investing in a Light Lamp, to increase the effects of sunlight.
