What Are The Benefits Of A Pet?
In this BIT: Have you ever asked yourself, ‘what are the benefits of a pet’? Explore the importance of animals, and how animals make you happy.
For many people, seeing and being around animals brings feelings of calm and happiness. In the USA, 66% of households have a pet and 85% of dog owners, as well as 76% of cat owners consider their animals family members. With so many people having pets, whether it’s a cat, dog, bird, or any other animal, just having them around is a sign that having a pet makes us happier. However, what exactly about the presence of a pet makes us feel good?
Lower Stress
Firstly, studies have shown that by interacting with animals levels of the stress hormone cortisol lower. Interacting with pets creates feelings of support and comfort, which is why many dogs are often used for therapy. In fact, well trained dogs are brought to nursery homes, hospitals, and other places where patients could use a mood boost. Dr. Ann Berger, a researcher and physician at the NIH Clinical Center found that animals are born with a sense of mindfulness, that is the ability to be present in the moment, while many people need to learn this habit. Animals can help teach patients to be mindful, compassionate, and have more intention, all of which can decrease stress and allow individuals to manage their pain better.
They Trigger A Happiness Chemical
In addition, being around animals triggers the release of oxytocin, a happiness chemical, in the brain. Oxytocin helps to increase focus, create feelings of well-being and comfort, as well as help kids develop better social skills, such as cooperation and sharing. Oxytocin also helps create a bond of trust. When you and an animal create a feeling of mutual trust, comfort and a sense of happiness follows.
Here are a few ways to benefit from being around pets, even if you don’t have one at home!
- If you have a pet at home, try to pet your animal for 3-5 minutes a day, three or more times a day. Stroke their fur, look into their eyes, and smile.
- Volunteer at the animal shelter! Spend time around animals in need and feel happier for helping.
- When on your walk, ask a stranger with a dog if you can pet them or say hi. Make sure you have permission first.
- Go over to a friend’s house that has a pet, and play or go on a walk with the pet along with your friend.
- Start a dog walking business. You can spend time outside, make money, and play with dogs all at once.
Overall, the importance of animals ranges over a wide spectrum. Spending time with animals and our pets can make you feel happier and less stressed. They are compassionate and loving, and give us a small bit of happiness.
We hope that this inspires you to spend more time with your pets, and give them the love they deserve, giving you a small bit of happiness.
