Malcolm Gladwell has a way of making you rethink what you thought you knew. From The Tipping Point to the 10,000-hour rule he popularized in Outliers, his ideas have sparked conversations far beyond the pages of his books. Not to mention, the concepts Malcolm discusses leave me deep in thought for days on end.

He blends social science research with compelling narratives to explore why we succeed, how ideas spread, and what shapes our decisions. 1. Adapt

The only constant in life is change! Adaptability helps us move through it. When we define ourselves too narrowly by a career, an identity, or the way we’ve always done things, we can close ourselves off to new possibilities. Malcolm’s career across newspapers, magazines, and books is a reminder of the value of being willing to evolve. Furthermore, in our own lives, this can start with something small: rethinking a routine, trying a different approach, or making room for a new (perhaps unfamiliar) opportunity.

2. Never Stop Learning

There is always more to learn! Whether it is about ourselves, the people around us, and even the subjects we know best. Often, the more we discover, the more questions we have. As our understanding deepens, we begin to notice details, complexities, and perspectives we hadn’t considered before. So, follow that curiosity. Ask another question, explore something that catches your attention, or listen to someone whose experience differs from yours. All in all, approaching each day or situation with the goal of learning just a little more gives us a small, meaningful way to grow.

3. Extend The Good

Life will always include moments we enjoy and moments we find difficult. Malcolm defines happiness as when “the sum total of moments when you’re enjoying yourself outweighs the sum total of moments when you’re not enjoying yourself.” Overall, his advice is to notice the pleasurable moments and make them last a little longer. That might mean lingering over a meal with someone you love, taking the scenic route on your walk, or giving yourself time for a favourite hobby. Pay attention to what brings you joy, and make more room for it.
