In this BIT: Peloton Instructor, Marcel Dinkins, shares her advice for self growth – both life hacks and fitness tips.

Be it in your relationships, fitness, studying (that’s me!), or how you show up for your own values and needs; life is a journey of stepping stones. As stated in one of my favorite quotes by Oprah Winfrey, “we can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.”  That’s just what this post is all about, self-growth.  Self-improvement.  Becoming your best self – a little bit at a time.  Who better to talk about pushing yourself towards your fullest potential than Peloton Instructor, Marcel Dinkins.  From working in the army, to studying fashion, and now working as a famous fitness instructor, Marcel has explored various industries; met different goals and challenges; and impacted millions of lives.  In an interview with Marcel, on our podcast Hack Your Happiness, she shared the below advice for self-growth.

1. Take The Hill

One of Marcel’s mantras is ‘we take the hill’.  This holds great depth and meaning, and the beauty of the saying is that it appeals and applies to everyone.  We’ve all got our own hills to climb.  Sometimes, Marcel explains that we begin to climb the hill, notice how far we’ve got left to go (in overcoming this challenge, reaching a goal, building a habit, or removing a source of negativity), and doubt our ability to actually climb the hill.  Rather than falling into a puddle of self doubt, take the hill!  Remember that you can do hard things, and reassure yourself.  Be it in a very difficult course, leaving an old job or friend group, or perhaps just trying to become an earlier riser – keep going!  You are often the greatest obstacle from your goals, determinations, and desires.

2. Let Yourself Learn

Understand how little you understand.  We all understand so little.  Next to nothing.  Even within areas and fields that we may consider ourselves well-versed or experienced; there’s always more to learn.  Be it in acquiring more fitness tips, studying a culture, or simply finding new life hacks – there is always more to learn! Don’t feel bad for not knowing much about the world, your interests, or even about yourself.  Rather, tap into this whitespace for self growth. Let yourself learn – and find the satisfaction that this brings out in you! Do not be ashamed of yourself for not knowing enough; be excited about all that you can someday understand.

3. Pivot, But Remain Aligned

In Marcel’s goal of becoming a Peloton fitness instructor – the ‘pinnacle’, to many, of fitness instruction, she was rigid in her goal.  When COVID hit, many people would have become overwhelmed by the intensity of such a shifting situation, and would’ve delayed or quit the goal altogether, justifying this choice within their mind.  Not Marcel.  She began instructing her own online classes; growing herself into a better online fitness coach, and demonstrating to Peloton recruiters that she would be a fantastic fit.  Ultimately, it was through her social media DMs that the job opportunity arose.  This aspect of Marcel’s story exemplifies something essential: pivot in how you’ll achieve your goals, but remain aligned to your goals and values. Flexibility is crucial in becoming the best version of yourself; there are so many external factors that we cannot change or control.  But, do not forget why you embarked on this goal in the first place.  The key to self growth is knowing the WHY behind your actions and desires.  WHY do you want this?  WHY are you doing this?  So long as you remain strict on the why, you can truly ride the waves of the times and develop into a constantly improving version of yourself. Stay close to your vision and mission, but be flexible enough to allow yourself to grow into different areas and strategies.
