The Truth About Setting Goals
In this BIT: Do you need help setting goals? View our top tips and advice for the new year! We’re here to help set goals that stick.
The new year is here and everyone is talking about setting new goals. But is this right for you? Goal setting doesn’t have to be about making your life difficult or strained. It is about bringing more balance and positivity into the new year. So, how can we set goals that are reachable and bring a positive impact on our lives?
Set goals and intentions with focus and decision-making in one area. This helps to create a goal and roadmap of how we can get from where we are now to where we want to be in a week, month, or year. Goals do not have to be overwhelming, they simply guide us to be accountable and create a positive change. They help us track if we’re following the outline that we set out for ourselves, and notice if we get caught up in our old routine. Below is our advice for the new year, on the topic of setting achievable goals and seeing them through.
1. Start with a Plan
One of the keys to sticking to a goal is to figure out what EXACTLY you want to change. The best goals are specific. However, remember life is about balance so it is okay to not achieve your goals from the very start. Progress over perfection! Are you trying to get better grades? Go to bed early. Spend less time on your phone? Figure out what you want your weekly screentime average to be. Now, find ways to incorporate these changes into your daily/weekly/monthly routine. Be very specific in how you will change your routine. If you notice that a lot of your ‘study time’ or time you could use to do a hobby is spent procrastinating and doomscrolling, shift your phone habits by leaving the phone in a different room or setting screentime limits on your apps.

2. Expect Off-Days
Nobody is perfect, be kind to yourself! Accept that sometimes life can get overwhelming, or unpredictable situations can arise. If you don’t work towards your new goal every day, it is not a sign to quit, what matters is long-term changes. Work towards these goals whenever you can – happiness is about balance. Avoid setting unreasonable expectations of a perfect routine change.
3. Share Your Goals
When you share your goal with someone else, it helps keep you accountable towards achieving this goal. We are less likely to skip a day at the gym when we’re going with a friend. Additionally, we are less likely to scroll on our phones in front of a parent or sibling if we told them we want to avoid this habit. By sharing your goals and bringing support into your life, you can help yourself stick to your goals!

All in all, goal setting is a powerful way to take control of your daily routine and mindset. We can make positive changes at any time of year, but with the start of the new year, there is an undeniable air of freshness in our lives. Take this as a time to make a goal for a more fulfilling new year. We hope that this advice for the new year helps make positive changes, bringing you a Small Bit of Happiness.
