School Success Habits: Why NOW Is The Time

For better or for worse, the back-to-school season is here. Regardless, it’s the best season to start a new and good routine! In this BITS post, we unpack why this season is a fantastic time for building new habits. Additionally, you’ll find out the best tips and tricks to make this school year better than ever by adding these quick habits.
Times of change, like the start of the school year, are a perfect time for making new success habits. Most of our routine is practiced on autopilot. During this period of change, we will be consciously making decisions which will eventually start turning into habits. This is a result of our brain having to re-engage and adjust to a new routine. Our minds must rewind and think, “What was I doing this time last year to get back on track?”, “Did that make me successful?”, “What should I do to make this time more successful?”. This is an ideal time to start building the habits we’ve always wanted to build. Below are a few easy habits for a successful school year!
Put Them Away
Start the school season with your desk and backpack organized. When you will need something throughout the year, everything will be exactly where you left it. When we know where everything is, the stress of locating items is relieved. Hence, we can focus on school work, or something more fun – rather than waste time on looking for things. This also applies to papers or assignments we get back! Have a go-to folder where you store these items.
Skip the snooze button. The urge to take just a few more minutes of sleep is real. Although it’s okay to sleep in some days, making a success habit of taking those few additional minutes can cause more stress in our lives. It’s true – we don’t need to add more ‘rush’ to the morning rush! Strive to wake up with the first alarm, or try setting an earlier alarm with another that follows up a few minutes later.
Help Your Future Self
A top piece of school advice: help your future self. Avoid future stress by completing assignments on time and studying for tests ahead of time. By breaking up studying and doing a little bit every day, we can do better on our work and remove the stress of cramming. Start building this habit into your routine by planning out work or study sessions as soon as you find out about deadlines.
