Italian Words to Live By

Navigating life as teens can be trying and stressful.  These Italian words to live by give us a small bit of happiness, inspire us and are helpful in shifting our perspective.  Our favorite Italian quotes will help you let go of control, stop worrying, and feel happier. So, the next time you’re in a stressful situation, feel sad, or lost in your path of life, remember these Italian words of wisdom, and know that you’re not alone.

Fun fact: In December 2016, 63% of surveyed Italians under 18 said that they are “happy”.  So give these words to live by a go!

Teen girl standing outside, with the wind blowing in her hair. She is brown hair in a ponytail, eyes closed, and is wearing a purple hoodie. At the bottom of the image, "quel che sara sara" is written in Italian.

Quel che sarà sarà”

This means that “what will be, will be”.  We can’t control everything, so why waste our precious time worrying over those very things.

Try: The next time you’re stressing over something, ask yourself if you can control it, and remind yourself: “what will be, will be.”

“Mangia bene, ridi spesso, ama molto.”

This translates to “eat well, laugh often, love much”.  It’s an Italian reminder of what is important in life, and what should be prioritized.

Try:  Enjoy the small moments in life, and live in the present.  Every time you eat a good meal, take a second to really enjoy all the flavors.  Every time you are laughing and smiling, take a moment to think about how precious and wonderful these moments are.  And when you’re with someone you love, whether that’s a family member, friend, or pet, take a moment to think about how lucky it is that you get to spend time with them.

From left to right, there is a teenage boy wearing blue denim jeans and a grey sweater, a brunette ten girl wearing a dark grey sweater, a teenage girl with long blonde hair, wearing green pants and a beige top, and a teenage girl with long black hair, wearing blue denim jeans, a white shirt, and green jacket. At the bottom, "mangia bene, ridi spesso, ama molto" is written in green font.

“Chi cerca, trova.”

This quote translates to “whoever seeks, finds”.  We must remember that if we want something, we have to put the time, energy, and effort into doing things to get us towards that goal. Just like an athlete trains daily to be the best they can be, we too have to work on accomplishing our goals.   And although it may seem that we will never get there, if we work hard enough, and don’t give up, we can achieve our goal.

Try: How can you stop worrying about not reaching your goals? The next time you’re working on a school assignment, studying for a test, training for your sport, practicing an instrument etc, remember that although it may be difficult, now, if you keep going, you will succeed.

Again, the next time you’re feeling down, stressed, or overwhelmed, remember these Italian quotes, and keep going.

We hope that these Italian words of wisdom give you a small bit of happiness.
